Artificial water scarcity benefits the water Mafia
The taps in many areas are running dry despite good rains and the board’s assurance.Due to the water shortage, the residents are forced to buy water from private water tankers. According to source, Artificial water scarcity benefits the water mafia as the private water tankers who earlier charged Rs200 for a tanker full of water were charging Rs500.
Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) insists that all of 900 million litres daily (MLD) of water to the city is being distributed. But taps in many areas are running dry. Bangalore suffers huge water losses amounting to a whopping 37%, according to BWSSB’s official estimates. However, the acute shortage felt across Bangalore has raised suspicions among resident welfare associations (RWAs) that it is a result of water mafia forging links with BWSSB officials to create an artificial scarcity so that they can sell water at higher rates.
An RTI query has revealed that Tillana Garden area received lesser than its scheduled water supply for two hours, three days a week. BWSSB officials insists that 900 million litres daily (MLD) of water to the city is being distributed and denied allegations of BWSSB officials’ dubious links with private water mafia.
