Bakrid Festival – Feast of Sacrifice aheads

Bakrid or Id ul Azha is one of the most awaited festivals of Muslims. The festival is also know as feast of sacrifice that commemorates the story of Abraham who was ready to offer up his only son Ishmael begotten after rigorous worship. On Bakrid festival, exchanging and distributing the meat of sacrificed animal is considered as blessed. Greeting one another with warm Bakrid wishes and preparation of special traditional dishes is considered as a part of this grand celebration.

Muslim share meat among their family, friends & neighbors. Huge crowds would assemble at mosques to offer ‘namaz’. People wear new dress and Greets one another with warm Bakrid wishes and preparation of special traditional dishes.

Bakrid is one of the important festival of India and most awaited festivals. Bakrid or feast of sacrifice is best time for goat sellers as festival aheads demand for goats also rise.Bakrid 2011 falls on November 6 and would conclude on November 9. On day before Bakrid, the road nearby faces a traffic jam with goat vendors lining up on the sides. As slaughtering goats is part of this grand celebration, goats are bought and sold in large numbers.

This year there would be hike in price of goats as every year 20 to 30 per cent hike in price can be seen. Price rise or not, there will always be demand for these goats and sellers are in hope to make quick bucks with these goats.

The festival is not only merrymaking and animal sacrifice. Muslims also engage in charitable acts and chanting of Takbir on feast of sacrifice. The state government takes safety and precaution methods by issuing strict directives to complete the security arrangements and precaution on health as there is steady increase in the number of diseases spreading through animals and bird.

Civic body officials instruct farmers and people to clean the area after the goat fair is over and use the accumulated waste as manure. They also directed officials to conduct daily checks in these areas and submit reports on cleanliness in those pockets.
