Ban on Illegal Borewells due to fall in Gurgaon’s Water Table

No Comments Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Aug 03, 2011

Gurgaon’s water table has been plummeting by 1 to 1.2 metres every year. The administration is compiling a list of all the illegal tubewells and borewells which have already been sealed. These borewells are not registered with the civic authorities and water is being used not for drinking but commercial purposes, thus making them illegal.

Civic authorities on Monday cracked down on a prominent car service centre in Sector 18 and sealed an illegal borewell that the service centre was using for cleaning cars.”The borewell on the premises of the violator had been sealed in the past but it was during a checking drive that we found it is still being used to draw water. An FIR against the violator will be registered on Tuesday,” said another HUDA official.

The authorities had swung into action after the Punjab and Haryana high court banned the use of tubewells and borewells in Gurgaon district. The court’s ban came after the alarming fall in the region’s water table.

In the daylong exercise, the HUDA team sealed 16 borewells in Sector 18. A senior HUDA official, who was part of the raiding team, said: “The owners of these commercial establishments and factories were warned several times against using the water of illegal borewells. But they didn’t pay any heed. So the team simply sealed all these borewells on Monday,” said the HUDA official.

“If any of the sealed borewells is found to be operational, then an FIR and criminal case will be registered against the owner of the commercial establishment and he won’t be given any warning,” said the official.
