Bangalore Citizens Discover Alternate Proposal to Reduce Dependence on Cauvery River

1 Comment Sub Category:Awareness,Community Posted On: Oct 13, 2011

The possible threat faced by the residents of Bangalore is shortage of water in the city, however is currently getting bulk supply from the Cauvery river. Meanwhile the Citizens Action Forum (CAF) from Bangalore city have come forward with an alternative proposal to reduce the dependency on Cauvery river. CAF has already placed the proposal to Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and also senior board officials, meanwhile the idea was also publicized to media recently. To avoid the excessive dependence of BWSSB on drawing water from rivers, the alternate proposal emphasizes on rainwater collection through other different methods including rejuvenation and interlinking of 184 lakes in the city and to use them tactfully. The project estimates 500 million litres a day (mld) that would be added by the end of year 2014 which would probably be sufficient only till the end of year 2017.

CAF has come forward with a rejuvenation of Arkavathy river and Hesarghatta lake which alone will yield 300 mld and other lakes across the city is expected to bring in nearly 500 to 800 mld along with recharging of the ground water. Henceforth one more alternate idea proposed by CAF is to consider 800 sq km of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) area on whole which records nearly 1,250 mm rainfall annually instead of considering individual rainwater harvesting projects. Also Storm water drain (SWD) networks can be used for the construction of reservoirs across the city, wherein nearly 1,000 mld can be stored for future needs. All these plans are ahead to bring out drastic useful results only if the water treatment plants are installed all over Bangalore city.

Why is BWSSB threatening to disconnect water supply for not doing RWH in every house. This is a heavy cost on pocket for each individual families for wrong solution. Doing RWH does not solve the water problem. This looks like another huge tax on all citizens besides various other taxes. Please increase the Sewarage and effluent treatment plant capacity to recycle water to the city. Use the public funds wisely instead of taxing public.
