Bangalore is likely to be hit by water crisis in May
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) hinted that Bangalore may face water crisis this summer.
An BWSSB officials said the Cauvery tribunal award notified that, despite the water shortage in the state’s reservoirs, Tamil Nadu will be supplied Cauvery river water.
The situation has became worse in the last five years. Water level has reduced drastically in irrigation dams.
A higher official said that, there is an extra 200 MLD (million litres per day) of water allocated for Bangalore, which will be sufficient for the city till April. There is additional water available in compared to last March, but the requirement in the city has increased.
With the recently commissioned Cauvery stage 4 phase 2, they are able to meet the immediate demands, he added.
This summer, about 15,000 villages could be affected, said the state administration. The state will compulsorily run out of water if there is no enough rain. The crisis will hit from May onwards, as the state is bound by the tribunal award to supply 2.4 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu.
It is said that Bangalore consumes 1.5 tmcft of water in a month and 18 tmcft in a year. People who are drawing water illegally without meters affects regular supply and they should regularize their connections.
The board had recorded 7.15 lakh connection in the city but recently BBMP had recorded that a growth of over 16 lakh property owners which meant that a huge percentage of this population would be drawing water illegally. BBMP is planning to conduct a drive to disconnect all those illegal water connections latest by March 15.
