Bangalore- The Cabinet has approved acquisition of land identified by BBMP to set up solid waste processing units in Bangalore.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had put forth a proposal of purchasing 476 acres of land in Arudi village near Doddaballapur, and 600 acres in Togarighatta in Tumkur district.

The responsibility of buying the land and paying compensation to farmers those who lose their lands in the process has been given to the Bangalore Urban Deputy Commissioner.

A special committee in the Deputy Commissioner (Urban) office will finalise the land rate and fix the rates of compensation to be given to farmers. Later the land will be acquired and given to BBMP. The land acquisition is expected to be done within three months.

Now it is the turn of locals in Togarighatta in Tumkur district to oppose the proposal to set up a waste processing unit in their village.

The BBMP has been presently dumping around 200 truckloads of garbage every day in Mandur landfill, over 50 each in S. Bingipura and Lakshmipura quarry pits and around 60 truckloads in Doddaballapur landfill which is managed by Terra Firma.

In order to avoid garbage crisis in future, the BBMP has plans to acquire additional land of around 1500 acres in various locations. It plans to set up several waste processing units in different directions of the city so that there will be no delay in processing waste. With more garbage processing units in the city, the civic body will be able to save on transportation costs and avoid accumulation of garbage.
