BMC contemplating cloud seeding

Comments(2) Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Jul 19, 2012

As the water stock in the lakes of the city is far from being sufficient, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering cloud seeding in catchment areas in the coming month as an option. Cloud seeding involves spreading either dry ice or silver iodide aerosols on clouds to stimulate rainfall.

The civic body states that if the catchment areas get decent rainfall in following 15 days, then there would not be water cuts but if that is not the case then the current stock would hold for 65 days only.

Although cloud seeding is an innovative plan, the fact that similar experiment carried out by the BMC in 2009 with an expenditure of over Rs 8 crore yielded no results, paints doubt over its success.
