The additional 147, at a cost of another Rs 80 crore, will be fixed on major pipelines that supply water. This will help to measure how much water actually reaches consumers.
The civic corporation will now be able to keep tabs on how much water is let out from reservoirs and how much of it actually reaches the end user. The second phase will involve water meters being installed at bulk consumer sites. In the third and the last phase, the meters will be installed at residential areas and housing societies so that the exact usage can be finally monitored.
According to officials, three large screens will be put up-two at a Bhandup complex and one at a Byculla maintenance yard-to monitor the water flow. Soon the civic corporation will be able to keep tabs on how much water is let out from reservoirs and how much of it actually reaches the end user.
