BMC misses out with correct records of plots in Mumbai

No Comments Sub Category:Mumbai,Municipality,Realty News Posted On: Apr 17, 2013

PlotsWith the fast pacing growth in the city with high rise, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has no idea of the number of open spaces or plots in Mumbai.

The civic body which is an authority body, supposed to keep records of all the plots available in the city, but fails to do so. It does not have the data either of the existing open spaces or plots to be acquired.

Even other government agencies apart from BMC have lot of numbers on parks, gardens, playgrounds and open plots, none of them matching with each other. The figures on open spaces vary in surveys carried out by government agencies and the NGOs.

As per a MMRDA survey, there are about 3,246 existing and proposed open spaces in the city which was mentioned in the development plan of 1991. However, only 1,247 of them are accessible to the public.

The city can be planned properly and it can be achieved only if there is correct data on open spaces.

Currently, the civic body is putting together all the data on the plots in the draft development plan. This development plan will be made public by next year.

The uniformity in open spaces figures is important to know the current status and to know how many are accessible and non-accessible, acquired and non-acquired. Once everything is in place and known, more and plots can be acquired for systematic development.
