BMC Mumbai names 43 Chowks, Gardens and Roads keeping 2012 Civic Polls in Mind
As the 2012 civic polls are nearing, BMC general body has planned to name 43 chowks, gardens and roads across the city. Most of these chowks are T intersections that didn’t have any nomenclature before. Now, they sport some long-winding names and tongue twisters.
Observers were surprised that all the requests were cleared in one go. The House is known to keep even important civic projects marked as urgent business, pending for several months. This has forced the state Cabinet to set a deadline of 60 days for all proposals to be cleared after they are put up before the municipal secretary.
Mayor Shraddha Jadhav said the naming business was routine even though 42 of the requests were taken up as urgent business. As planned the intersection of C P Tank Road and Nanubhai Desai Road in C ward is named after Kalikund Tirthodharak Acharya Rajendra Sushiwarji Maharaj Chowk. Similarly, the intersection of D K Sandu Marg and V N Purav Marg in Chembur has been named as Shri Gaggubhai Thokarshi Chadva Chowk.
In the D ward, the chowk formed at the intersection of Raja Rammohan Roy Marg, Padamjee Marg and Achyutrao Balwant Kolhatkar Marg has been named as Sheth Pallonji Khurshedji Cama-Cama Baug Chowk.
“It was the administration which put up all these proposals at one time and that too as urgent business, therefore, we cleared it. It has nothing to do with the elections. Some proposals on promotions and leaves were cleared,” said Jadhav.
