BMC Mumbai promised to Repair Roads in 48 Hours
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai, which has budgeted Rs 40 cr this year to fix bad patches and potholes, continues carrying out repair work during the four months of the monsoon. But heavy rain this year has prevented them from doing their job properly. Even flyovers have developed potholes.
Due to constant criticism from citizens, BMC has promised to construct or do potholed road repair works in next 48 hours provided it does not rain.
According to a recent survey there are about 7,500 potholes on 1,100 bad patches around the city. Due to sparse rainfall this week it has given an opportunity to patch up these potholes. “The potholes are being filled and the process has been expedited. Constant downpour did worsen the road condition, making it difficult for commuters to move around. We are, however, hopeful that the dry spell would continue and the work would not get disrupted,” said additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta.
Of the total 1,940-km network, 350 km is the worst affected since these bitumen roads were developed in an ‘integrated’ manner under a defect liability provision ( DLP). Under this system, private contractors were given the responsible for roads’ upkeep for five years, with little or no supervision from the corporation.
Asked if the contractors would be hauled up for shoddy work, Gupta said the time is not right. “This is certainly not the right time to pull them up. It would demoralize them. We cannot afford that at this point of time. We have spoken to the contractors and have given them a warning. The scenario is likely to change,” he said.
