BMC to frame policy to keep a check on noise pollution at construction sites
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to frame a new policy to keep noise pollution to minimal at construction sites.
With increasing construction of properties in Mumbai, noise pollution is also on a rise. The number of complaints related to noise pollution is increasing day by day. A policy is needed to keep a check on noise which will bring relief to several residents.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act does not have any provisions or guidelines for builders for curbing noise pollution. In the last few years, there has been a rapid growth in the construction of apartments in Mumbai. Due to which, residents have to bear with a lot of noise which is a physical and mental health hazard.
Recently, one of the political parties of the state has proposed a policy to the municipal secretary for drafting new guidelines for noise pollution at construction sites.
If everything is in place and the new policy comes up then the developers have to adhere to the norms while carrying out development in residential areas.
The development and planning (DP) department of the civic body is thinking about the new policy and very soon it will bring a new policy to curb noise during construction. Furthermore, in December 2012, the Bombay High Court had asked the BMC to frame guidelines for construction activity which leads to noise pollution.
Now, the permitted noise level is up to 75 decibels for compactors (rollers), front loaders, concrete mixers, cranes (movable), vibrators and saws used in construction sites.
