Bulk generators to dispose their own waste
Many residential and commercial associations are coming forward with promises to clean garbage by having their own solid waste management and scientific disposal system, after the BBMP’s campaign ” Wake up, Clean up Bengaluru” happened earlier this month.
The waste from bulk generators in the city will no longer be transported to the landfills. Instead, it will be taken to compost units, where waste will be converted into manure. Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is also planning to use shredders, developed by ANS Consultancy, to process waste like banana leaves, garlands, vegetable peels, coconut shells and food waste.
Apartment complexes, industrial layout, hospitals and commercial establishments are among the bulk generators who made such commitments.
A senior BBMP officials said that, about 40 percent of the apartments in Bangalore city, more than 134 companies, including both small and big and 2,500 to 3,000 industries in various layouts have committed themselves to dispose their waste on their own over the next three months.
Many private companies have also expressed their intent to dispose their waste by recycling and using waste disposal mechanisms on their own campus.
The Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industries said that the industrial belt will has a practical waste disposal mechanism by June 2013.
BBMP officials said that the burden of collecting and disposing garbage will reduce if the bulk generators keep their promises. They hope that around 1,500 tonnes of waste will be diverted from landfills and sent elsewhere, which will give a massive relief from the public pressure and help to solve the solid waste management problems.
The main dispute is to ensure that the bulk generators set up their own disposal plants. The hoteliers and marriage halls are in process to make arrangements of disposing the waste, the primary target will now be the apartments that need to implement the possible alternative mechanisms for disposing the wet waste.
