BWSSB to replace 60 thousand odd pipeline in south zone

South Bangalore residents are bound to face a rough way ahead. . BWSSB’s plans to replace 60,000-odd pipelines that connect to households in the south zone. Besides, the 145km water distribution network will also be replaced. For this pilot venture, south zone has been divided into 40 parts (districts meter). Each will have 2,000 to 2,500 connections. The project will be taken up in 52sqkm of area at a cost of Rs 174 crore. After work is over, the contractor has to maintain it for at least three years. The project will be funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Announcing this on Monday, BWSSB chairman P B Ramamurthy said: “We are taking up a pilot project to reduce unaccounted for water (UFW) in the south zone. At least, 50,000 to 60,000 house connections will be replaced. A lot of digging work is involved. In fact, we have asked the BBMP to give us a list of roads that are to be asphalted so that we don’t dig up the newly laid ones.” Ramamurthy added that tenders have been called for the project.Work will begin in another three months. The contractor will be given 36 months to complete the project.

Detailing on the project, BWSSB chief engineer (Cauvery project) Narayana said at least 2,000 district meters will be fixed to monitor water flow. This project is to survey the existing system, establish bulk metres to measure initial wastage of water and identify high levels of leakage and implement necessary residential measures.
