Cabbies and autowallahs fined Rs 14 lakh in past two months
The three Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in the Mumbai city have collected Rs 14 lakh as penalty from errant drivers in the past two months alone.The Transport Department has received 4,000-odd complaints from passengers on its helpline 1800-22-0110. Most of the calls were for fare refusals, especially for short distances.
Every driver refusing a passenger was fined Rs 500 under the Motor Vehicle Act.The maximum complaints were against rickshaw-wallahs in western Mumbai followed by taxi drivers outside Bandra and Mumbai Central stations.
There are over 55,000 cabs and one lakh auto-rickshaws plying within Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits. The Transport Department has received 4,000-odd complaints from passengers. Of the 3,200 complaints the department responded to, most came from the western suburbs. The department has also been informing each complainant about the action taken.
An RTO official added that complaints on drivers’ misbehaviour accounted for less than 10 per cent of the total number of complaints. In the last two months the Transport Department has received over 4,000 complaints on its helpline and collected Rs 14 lakh as penalty from errant drivers.
