Chennai Metro Rail Chaos
Chennai metro rail has become a major issue in the neighborhood and residents wake up to find the parks next to their houses are no more. Slowly, they realize it is the inevitable cost of their urban dreams. Chennai Metro Rail has started construction of underground structures at Shenoy Nagar, Broadway and EVR Periyar Salai. Falling in the process are decade-old trees in Thiru VI Ka Park, Sri Ramalu Park and Nehru Park. Construction work will begin in May Day Park near Chindadripet in a couple of weeks.
The residents of the locality, however, the reality seems to have sunk in, especially after metro rail officials cut down the trees and reforestation plans have become transparent by keeping them in the loop. The authorities have put up boards explaining the number of trees being cut and the number of saplings to be planted. After the underground work gets over, they hope, reforestation would help the park regain its lost glory.
One of the senior metro rail officer from Chennai reported saying, “these parks could not be spared because the government wanted to keep private land acquisition to the bare minimum and hence had to look at government roads and land while deciding on the corridors. We are on schedule with the work because there have been no big hassles of land acquisition which could have also cost the government a fortune,” he says. Chennai Corporation, however, has paid a price. The civic body had spent Rs 1.67 crore on beautification of Thiru Vi Ka Park two years ago”.
