Chennai residents protest over garbage dumping

1 Comment Sub Category:Chennai,Cities,Civic Issues,Municipality Posted On: Feb 04, 2013

garbageChennai- Many residents of Thoraipakkam and Perungudi protested against the garbage dumping in their villages and demanded the Chennai corporation to stop doing the same.

These residents formed a human chain in front of the Perungudi garbage dump yard gate situated at Pallikaranai Marsh. Some residents said that groundwater in this place resembles waste water from dyeing unit.

The residents are now using packaged water for drinking and cooking purposes. Water supplied by government agencies in Perungudi are used for bathing purpose.

Besides this, residents of Thoraipakkam asked Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to take pollution measures. Pollution has reached to brim such that many people including children and senior citizens are suffering a lot due to burning of garbage. These problems include breathing problems, itching of eyes, rashes etc. The situation is so worse that the curtains of houses have turned ash in color.

Residents believe that if no garbage is dumped here, the condition of ground water will definitely improve. This land at yard must be handed over to the Forest Department for rehabilitating the Pallikaranai Marsh. Residents also doubt that the sewage collected from septic tanks is also dumped here which further pollutes the groundwater. However, the civic body disagrees with this.

Residents have asked the Chennai city corporation and state government to implement strict measures in this regard. The civic body officials mentioned that the situation will become better with completion of construction work inside the dumpyard. They will permit better control of fires and better access to the garbage heaps. They assured that the dumping of garbage will be done in systematic manner when the site is ready for scientific closure.
