Water crisisChennai – As summer is approaching, Tamil Nadu government assured that Chennai will not face any water crisis despite failed monsoon.

The government has lots of hope with the commissioning of the Nemelli desalination plant in the Chennai city. Chief Minister has ordered to initiate this plant at the earliest. This plant will supply 100 million litre drinking water to the city. Similar kind of plant is situated in Minjur, Chennai. The other parts of the state will also be supplied water regularly through combined water schemes.

Local administration minister K P Munusamy answered queries of several political parties and informed about a drinking water scheme by using water from Vaigai river. This scheme provides drinking water to Thirumangalam in Madurai district to 35 residential areas. He added that another such scheme will also be implemented for the rest 154 areas.

The political parties involved in this discussion were All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, (AIADMK) Communist Party of India,(CPI), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and Congress.

The minister added that government will maintain the present supply of water ( 831 million litres ) till April or May 2013. But currently the water stored in reservoirs of city is not even half of the total storage capacity.

A scheme of worth Rs 284 crore will provide water by January, 2014 to 1,430 rural residential colonies including Melur, Avaniapuram and Paravai. A similar scheme will also be implemented to supply water at 3,242 residential areas in Sivanganga and Pudukottai districts. Tenders will be invited soon in this regard.

Theni-Allingaram and Hogenekkal drinking water schemes will soon also be implemented. Hogenekkal scheme will supply water to Dharmapuri and adjoining areas. Cauvery combined drinking water scheme will also be initiated this year. It will supply drinking water to Cuddalore, Villupuram, Vridhachalam and Dindivanam areas.

Thus on whole, the government is taking right steps to supply drinking water to various areas of state.
