Citizens teach waste management
Though BBMP’s waste segregation moves have floundered, residents from 100-odd apartments and 26 villas of Sobha Althea and Azalea have shown the city how to successfully manage the waste.
The residents segregate the waste they generated into dry and wet and further divided the dry waste into 14 categories. The waste generated in the society every month does not go to the landfill. It is all either reusable or compostable.
It is not just a passion to clean up the waste but a deep understanding of things related to our way of living. The landfill crisis gave them a reason to start waste management in a big way.
The first step was to begin interactions will all the apartments owners and the second step was to train maids and housekeeping staffs. The green committee that manages waste issues has more than 10 women who train maids, up keep of the compound and monitoring waste segregation on daily basis.
Sobha Althea and Azalea’s success in solid waste management has drawn the attention of other residential enclaves in the area. Residents of neighbouring apartments approached them to know how the residents of Sobha Althea and Azalea’s manage their waste.
Every household has three bins for dry waste, kitchen waste and bio-waste.The dry waste is divided into 14 types:
Bottles containing food and drink; bottles/containers of floor cleaners etc; metal cans and canisters; tetrapacks; cardboards used for packing; milk packets; newspapers; soiled newspapers; white sheets; books and note books for writing; soft plastic used for packages; coconut shells; electronic waste; wood and rubber.
Recyclers take away all the segregated waste and pay the residents around Rs 4,000 a month which is paid as incentives to housekeepers.
A group of citizens has taken the trend of scientific waste disposal to a new level. BBMP should adopt such kind of schemes, where the garbage segregators are given incentives.
