Civic body to penalize 50 building defaulters
New-Delhi- After two long years of ignorance, the civic body awakens to penalize about 50 building defaulters. Earlier in May 2011, around 50 illegal buildings in Feroze Gandhi market were issued notices by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. The Civic body is again into action and has started sealing and demolishing the buildings with four and more floors.
The area, Feroze Gandhi market, which was set up by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has always been into controversies. Due to the illegal floors here, there have been grave parking issues within the market. Not just this, there have also been complaints of eve teasing in the market.
None of the buildings in the market are expected to have more than four floors as well as basements as per the LIT scheme. This norm has been implied keeping in mind the size of the parking lots. Perhaps, most of the properties in Ludhiana along with reputed banks have more than four floors.
An RTI which was filed by one of the RTI activists against the defaulters stated that he had received a reply to his RTI once he shifted the first appellate authority in July 2012. The reply precisely stated that the civic body seldom had any records or papers about the action to be taken. In fact, they did not even have a written record of the illegal buildings. However, complaint regarding these issues was filed by the RTI activist to which there was no response.
One of the key reasons for the MC failing to demolish illegal floors despite issuing notices was the political pressure. According to the town planner, the sealing process was communicated to the building owners and that the drive will start within few days. The illegal floors will either be demolished or sealed.
