Commuting on 60 Feet Road remains a Harrowing Experience for Annanur Residents

Last laid in 1994, the stretch of 60 Feet Road in Annanur near Avadi, Chennai has remained without a tar top for several years. “A day’s rain is enough to make it a slushy nightmare,” said V Gopalan, secretary of the resident welfare association. Even if the municipality agrees to relay the road, it will have to wait till the storm water drain works which has dug up the road badly.

The councilor said labourers from Thiruvannamalai working on the drain have taken a ten-day break. “Works will resume only after the monsoon subsides.Residents are angry. “We have been paying taxes for so many years. This is unfair that our only main road is not maintained well,” said a resident, S Hariharan.

Commuting remains a harrowing experience for residents of Annanur near Avadi as the state government and the railways refuse to take ownership of 60 Feet Road which has been in a state of disrepair for five years.

The road is the only connection for Annanur residents to the Chennai- Thiruvallur High Road. Southern Railways carried out the last repairs five years ago, after which it ‘realized’ that the road, also called the Annanur Railway Station Road, doesn’t come under its purview.

“We thought the road came under our jurisdiction. Later we realized that it is ‘poromboke’ land belonging to the public works department,” said Southern Railways assistant division engineer Karthikeyan. If the railways is right, it has to be maintained by the Avadi municipality. However, the ward councilor doesn’t agree. “It belongs to the railways. We can improve the road only when they hand over the road to the municipality,” said K Veeraraghavan, councilor of ward 14.
