Constables to monitor Housing Societies in Khar

No Comments Sub Category:Community,Uncategorized Posted On: Jul 28, 2011

A new model has been introduced by Pratap Dighavkar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone IX) to have a cohesive group of citizens and assign 8-10 housing societies to one constable in Mumbai. He will liaise with secretaries of the societies and maintain data of security guards. The constable will also get in touch with security agencies to check the past record of security guards. He will alert the residents, mainly senior citizens, of the trends in crimes. However, this will not be the constable’s full-time duty. This motive has been taken after the recent spate in burglaries in the upscale Bandra-Khar region.

“Watchmen will be trained by the constable, who will also have the track record of the security guards and domestic helps. The utility services records will be with the watchmen and the constable. These constables will be accountable for the buildings they will monitor,” said Aftab Siddique, chairperson, 33rd Road ALM,
Khar (West).

The move comes in the wake of several incidents where watchmen were responsible for robberies in many housing societies. The model was launched by additional commissioner of police, Vishwas Nagre-Patil (Zone IX) on Wednesday. To begin with, one constable will be appointed for eight to ten housing societies in Khar, depending on the sizes of the societies. The constable will function as a mukadam of watchmen and keep an eye on them.

The DCP will take feedback from the local police station. Dighavkar intends to implement a three-point programme – delegation, bringing people together, decentralization and accountability to create a sense of security among citizens. Besides, one API and two sub-inspectors will also be appointed area-wise.
