Metro railNagpur- A detailed project report (DPR) of Nagpur’s metro rail construction in two routes has been submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The routes would stretch over 42 km and the project cost is estimated to be over Rs 10,000 crore.

Nagpur Mass Transport Company (NMTC), the special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the project, has to submit the DPR to the state government which will forward it to the central government for budgetary provisions.

DMRC has come up with two prime routes for metro rail in the city. It seems that the work would begin in the current calendar year itself if everything goes as planned.

Besides lifting the city’s public transport system to a new level, the metro rail project is also expected to play a vital role in Advantage Vidarbha. The government is also striving hard for the  success of metro rail in the city. The budgetary provisions will play a crucial role as the project requires huge funds.

In the first phase, the North-South route from  Automotive square to Mihan, stretching around 20 km will be taken up first. And then the second route in East-West corridor from Prajapati Nagar-Wardhaman Nagar to Hingna, stretching around 22 km will be started.

Both the routes have been proposed to be in elevated system as planned by the DMRC. Only the airport metro stretch is planned underground. The East-West route will also pass via the main railway station. The two routes will cross at Sitabuldi and a major station will be built in that place.

EGS minister Nitin Raut said that the Nagpur’s metro rail may soon catch up with Pune metro rail. He added that the timely completion of metro rail project will be taken care of through regular follow-ups and better supervision.

The increase in charges that was quoted by DMRC for the DPR was approved by the trustees of NIT’s board. According to the board’s resolution, the proposal was to prepare DPR for single route with 30 km length.

DMRC was to be paid Rs 8 lakh per kilometre plus service tax. As per this calculation, a sum of Rs 24 lakh was approved on December 27, 2011. But later, DMRC conducted traffic survey in May 2012 and suggested that metro rail from Automotive square to Butibori may not be viable. And it had proposed two routes within the city, North-South and East-West corridors, through which, the total length of metro routes increased to 42 km. On this basis, DMRC shall be paid Rs 96 lakh and service tax.
