Corporators urge GHMC to take over Nampally Sarai
Hyderabad- Nampally Sarai is targeted by the city corporators for the construction of a high rise commercial complex. Thus they urged Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take over this heritage resting place from the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) so that they can generate more revenue.
A general body meeting of main parties was held on February 19, 2013. Floor leaders of parties namely Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Congress, and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) gathered there. They all expressed their desire to repossess the ramshackled heritage site.
There was heated argumentation related to decision of HMR to use the heritage site for construction of an overhead station and an interlinking facility with the Nampally railway station. The heritage activists already opposed the decision of HMR.
According to the commissioner, in 2008, enough land was handed over to HMR for the construction work. It included surrounding open land of Sarai and nine other municipal properties in Hyderabad. Actions will be taken against HMR if these spaces are not utilised fully.
Since HMR is exploiting commercial spaces for the metro, they are supposed to pay permit fee and share advertisement revenue. But these conditions were ruled out by the commissioner in the signed and sealed agreement.
He added that measures have also been planned to expedite the process of remodelling of storm water drains. A compensation of around Rs.10,000 will be paid for six months to the families affected. This compensation will be offered where 50 percent or more property is affected in removal of encroachments.
A amount of Rs. 383 crore is earmarked to repair 15 minor drains for the coming four years. Around Rs. 50- 60 crore will be utilized in 2013 for this purpose. He announced that tenders related to desilting of storm water drains will also be finalised within few days. The work will be completed in two months i.e from March 1, 2013 to April 31, 2013.
