Councillors to conduct a survey for each Zone to check on MCG Gurgaon’s Report on Funds Spent
An unhappy mayor has asked all the councillors to conduct a survey in their respective wards and has formed committees for each zone to check on the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon’s claims of funds spent. The councillors have already started the groundwork for the survey. Many of them have claimed that there have been several instances of unjustified expenses and unfinished project works in their respective wards.
The councillors now are demanding a detailed report of the projects undertaken in the financial year so they can ascertain the amount that is being spent. “Money has been spent in vain in projects which were totally useless. Moreover, no investigating body is in place to keep tabs on the contractors and the quality of work delivered,” said a councillor.
The city’s mayor is not satisfied with the MCG’s report on all the expenditure incurred by it since its formation in June 2008. He finds a gap between the projects undertaken and the funds spent.Although the MCG has given the details of expenses amounting to Rs 130 crore that it has purportedly spent on various projects under its jurisdiction, the mayor is convinced that the figures don’t add up.
According to the details of the estimate provided by the MCG, tenders amounting to nearly Rs 4 crore were floated for the construction of various roads in 2010. This included the road connecting old Delhi and Gurgaon village, the road between Sheetla hospital and Choti Mata Mandir, and the one from Holi ground to Sector 5. The locals, however, are unhappy with the quality of the work and have approached the municipal authorities, complaining about the poor condition of these roads.
All these revelations put paid to the tall claims by the former commissioner, Rajesh Khullar, who had said that the Citizens’ Supervisory Committees (CSC) would be formed which would include locals, RWA members, councillors and MCG officials concerned who would monitor the quality of work carried out before the contractor was made a payment.
For instance, the 1.5-km road in Samaspur village was built by the MCG in mid-2010. Made of concrete, the road should have lasted for at least 25-30 years. However, in January this year, the road was demolished and a new contract for building a ready mix concrete (RMC) road was floated.
Rama Rani Rathee, councillor of Ward 34, said, “Nearly Rs 3 crore has been spent in my ward and the particulars are not even clearly mentioned. So I have written back to the MCG asking them for the detailed report of the tenders allotted and the work done. The completed projects, according to the MCG, are not up to the mark. The tenders have been awarded at inflated prices and that is the reason why we have asked for the detailed report.”
