Delhi and NCR: Road expansion project in VasantKunj gets a green signal from NGT to resume work
The public works department has received a go-ahead from the NGT (National Green Tribunal) to resume work on the expansion of the Andheria Mod-Mahipalpur road. This has brought a lot of relief to the hundreds of people who use the Andheria Mod-Mahipalpur road daily to access Gurgaon and IGI airport.
In February 2012 the work was stalled after the PWD’s (Public Works Department) contractor allegedly illegally felled several trees on the stretch. The good news is that the work on the stretch is expected to commence by the end of September. However certain new elements like service roads and footpaths were added to the original plan. Hence the PWD might have to re-tender the work and the project could take a year to be finished.
The total width of the new road would be 75m. A single carriageway will include 5m of green strip, 6.5m of service lane, another 1.5m green strip, a 3.2m wide footpath under which drains will be laid. This single carriageway will also include a 1m green strip, a 3m wide non-motorised transport path and then a 14m wide road. The same layout will be mirrored on the other carriageway. UTTIPEC (Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure, Planning and Engineering Centre) has suggested creation of a utility duct under the service lane, though it may not make it to the final project.
