Delhi govt to install solar panels on rooftops
Delhi government is planning to generate solar energy in government buildings. The environmental department has approved nine projects on rooftops of government buildings, which is expected to generate at least 240 Kilowatt peak (KWp) of power.
This projects will include areas like Vikas Bhawan II in Civil Lines and four government schools and hospitals.
The director of the department of environment, Anil Kumar said that the largest – a 100 KWp project – has been sanctioned on the Vikas Bhawan II rooftop. It has also been reported that Ministry of Renewable Energy (MRE) and Delhi government have approved the project and the tender process, through the Public Works Department (PWD), and is expected to be completed by March.
The maximum number of government houses are situated in Vikas Bhawan II in Civil Lines. This project is planned in a way that the buildings will be able to run solely on power generated through solar energy from the rooftops.
According to Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary, Environment department, each school is expected to generate 10 KWp, while each hospital will generate 25 KWp.
Looking at growing real estate scenario in Delhi and low availability of land, government chose to install solar panels on rooftops, although it it is difficult in a city like Delhi where land is limited and comes at a premium cost price.
Around 30% of the project will be funded by MRE and Delhi government will fund the rest.
