Delhi High Court-Construct Shelter home for poor women
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said the government should construct the shelter home for destitute pregnant women in the city. The bench asked counsel Najmi Waziri to inform the government to construct the third shelter-home for destitute pregnant and lactating women to check child deliveries on footpaths.
The bench said the government should construct the shelter home in four months near the area where such women were mostly found.
Advocate Anubha Rastogi, the amicus appointed by the court, said two shelter homes, one in Jahngirpuri and the other in Sarai Rohilla, were already operational with medical facilities but due to their distance many destitutes were not able to avail of the facilities.
The court was hearing a PIL seeking facilities and care for destitute pregnant and lactating women in the city following an incident where a woman died after delivering a child in a crowded market in July last year. The court also directed New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to set up night shelters for the poor during hearing of another PIL.
While hearing the plea of a resident of Hanuman Road Park area that the locals were facing inconvenience due to pavement dwellers, the bench asked the civic agency to look for an alternative accommodation with basic amenities for the homeless in three weeks.
The bench also constituted a committee of two women lawyers — Jyoti Singh and Sobhana Takkia — to visit night shelter homes in the city to see the facilities available for the occupants.
