Delhi households fail to segregate waste before disposal

No Comments Sub Category:Civic Issues,Delhi-NCR,Maintenance,Municipality Posted On: Jan 24, 2013

wasteNew-Delhi- The green and blue dustbins which were set up across the city in 2009 with an aim to segregate the waste are now being used just as ordinary dustbins.

A large number of households are failing to segregate the waste as one of the three municipal zones has issued a tender to collect and segregate the waste  last week. The other two corporations have held the project’s failure responsible for the lack of co-operation from households and improper efforts by the private concessionaires.

Each day there is about 7,000 metric tonnes of waste collected with the shortage of the space and landfill sites. The landfill sites in the city can take up only 7,100 metric tonnes (MT) of waste each day. There are already three landfills which are completely exhausted with the fourth one having to be used in a limited manner. It has been difficult for the workers to transport the waste over such a long distance.

According to an environment department official, the segregation of waste should be considered very important as the city has shortage of space. With the waste being segregated between wet and dry, there will be very less waste left to be sent for the landfills. The only way to manage waste is to segregate the waste.

The officials also stated that despite the segregation of waste, the effort put in goes as waste as even the segregated waste is dumped along  with other waste on landfill sites. The private concessionaires from the two zones have been penalized as they have failed to segregate waste.

It was told by the officials that when the households fail to segregate the waste the concessionaires are responsible to do so. And sources state that the concessionaires are not doing their job well and that they have been penalized.

A penalty of Rs 51 lakh and Rs 1.25 crore were imposed in the Rohini and Civil Lines zones on a private concessionaire. Similarly, the Delhi Waste Management (DWM) was penalized with a penalty of Rs. 64 lakh for failing to maintain the sanitary conditions.

In the past few months, the city’s Okhla-Timarpur waste-to-energy plant which was introduced by the government to tackle the city’s waste management has been receiving very little waste. As per sources there has been a large amount of waste being sent by the corporation, in which the plant cannot incinerate with the situation remaining the same despite many complaints.

However, due to the mismanagement of the waste, the corporation has been held responsible by the Delhi Waste Management (DWM), which is responsible for waste management in the area. Henceforth there are various steps taken to curb the waste management in the city.
