Delhi Metro goes deeper, to set record
Delhi- Delhi Metro is planning to construct its deepest tunnel with 29 metres depth which will pass under an existing metro line.
According to the plan, the 37 km long stretch starting from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden in Noida will pass below the existing Hauz Khas station and have a station at a depth of 29 metres. Generally, the existing Metro stations have an average depth of 17 metres. To allow such a construction at deep level, the authorities have come up a unique design plan.
Delhi metro officials have initiated a massive upgrade of construction infrastructure in order to get ready for the achievement. Key aspects to be considered in this regard are the topography and draft plan of the station, the mode of construction and the machinery deployed.
The new Hauz Khas station is emerging prime metro hub as it provides good connectivity between Metro lines between Gurgaon (Huda City Centre-Jahangirpuri) and Noida, thus decreasing the travel time of commuters commuting between Noida and Gurgaon.
The proposed station will be perpendicular to that of the Yellow Line at Hauz Khas station. Many new technology features will be used to make the project a successful one, said officials.
The upcoming Hauz Khas station will be called as the ‘Rajiv Chowk’ of the Phase-III. This is because the passengers travelling between Gurgaon and Noida, and South Delhi localities like Nehru Place and Kalkaji will not need to travel to Rajiv Chowk. Instead they can change trains at Hauz Khas station. The interchange will allow Yellow Line passengers from Gurgaon to switch to a direct Metro to Botanical Garden in Noida, instead of travelling all the way to Rajiv Chowk. This plan will help in decongesting the Rajiv Chowk station, which receives a daily average footfall of 5 lakh.
At least half an hour travel time will be reduced as it allows commuters to reach from Noida to Gurgaon, and the other way around, in 50 minutes. The line would probably start functioning in 2016. An average daily footfall of 1.69 lakh commuters may be using the line, expect the officials.
The subway from the south access point of the existing Hauz Khas Metro station will be broadened to allow for integration with the Phase-III station. It will be constructed in five phases, so that the traffic movement on Outer Ring Road is not disturbed. During the construction, the one entry/exit of the station would be closed temporarily and once completed, there would be three entry/exit points.
The Delhi Metro officials have planned well over a systematic and organised interchange between the two stations. The new and old lines at Hauz Khas station will be connected through a ramp. The major challenge would be construction of a tunnel below an existing tunnel — the two tunnels will be separated by just three metres.
As the station is located close to many residential colonies and a school, the officials have also planned to instal sound-proof barriers on the barricades. The areas located in vicinity of project are Sarvapriya Vihar Colony, Delhi Colony, RBI Colony.
