Delhi: NGT clears stalled Andheria Mod-Mahipalpur road expansion project
The NGT has finally, after a period of more than two years, given the green signal to the Public Works Department (PWD) to resume work on the expansion of the Andheria Mod-Mahipalpur road.
The work on the road – which is used by hundreds of people every day to commute to Gurgaon and IGI Airport – was stalled in February 2012, when a number of trees were allegedly felled illegally by a PWD contractor.
However, with the NGT now having given the PWD the go-ahead to resume work on the Andheria Mod-Mahipalpur road, it is expected that the work on the stretch will likely begin by the end of this month.
But, the work on the road will probably require the PWD to re-tender it because the original expansion plan has been revised to incorporate some new additions like service roads, green strips and footpaths. As such, the completion of the work on the road will possibly take one year.
With the expanded Andheria Mod-Mahipalpur road to now be 75m wide, a senior PWD official said: “The project had to be tweaked to ensure that the highest number of trees could be saved… Clearances have been taken for the first phase of the project, from Andheria Mod to Fortis Hospital. Around 80% of land is clear for work.”
