Delhi’s unsafe illegal buildings

After the earth shook on Tuesday in east Delhi, residents came out of their houses to safety and was reminded of the 2010 earthquake which killed almost 71 people.The maximum number of unsafe and illegal buildings are in East Delhi.

East Delhi is prone to earthquakes due to illegal constructions and unauthorised colonies, where houses have been constructed on weak foundations.

The civic agencies have turned their back towards this dilapidated buildings and the colonies which are near to river bed are at maximum risk.

According to the civic agency officials, this illegal buildings are constructed because they are unable to get their building plans sanctioned due to strict norms.

The topographic survey says that Delhi is located in seismic zone IV, which is the second-highest earthquake hazard zone in India.

Hence, there are many buildings which are prone to earthquakes and are vulnerable to damage if an earthquakes strikes.

According to Vulnerability Atlas of India 2007 reports, there are almost 33.8 lakh buildings in Delhi, over 31 lakh are at medium risk of being affected by an earthquake, while 1.46 lakh are at high risk.

The infrastructural safety is not assured by the engineers while the construction is going on. Hence building collapses have become common in the past few years.
