Elders State Helpline a new support system for senior citizens

HelpAge India (HAI) on Wednesday launched a toll-free ‘Elders State Helpline‘ in Bangalore. The objective of support system is to help seniors who are neglected, abused, harassed and financially exploited. The helpline number is 1800-180-1253 and will operate 24×7.

Senior citizens living in the city may call 1800-180-1253 between 9.15 a.m. and 5.15 p.m. for assistance. This helpline functions separately from the 24-hour toll-free helpline at 1090 or 080-22943226 run by Nightingales Medical Trust and the city police, as well as the helpline at 080-41511307 run by the Dignity Foundation that works between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Besides, the staff manning the helpline would coordinate with the local police in rescuing elders who were missing.



HelpAge India is secular, not-for-profit organization (NGO) set up in 1978, and since then have been raising resources to protect the rights of India’s elderly and provide relief to them through various interventions. HelpAge India make society aware of the concerns of the aged and promote better understanding of ageing issues and help the elderly become aware of their own rights so that they get their due and are able to play an active role in society.

“We will provide police intervention in cases such as rescuing elders from roads and other locations, dealing with cases of abuse and other emergencies,” added Prakashan M, senior manager, programs.

Deputy director of Karnataka State Legal Service Authority Sunil Kumar Singh said: “To create awareness among people about legal services and how they can also help the elderly through such NGOs could work wonders for them in the long run. We could provide free legal advice and settle their problems in the Lok Adalat at concessional rates.”
