EWS Beneficiaries have to Wait till Next Year for Actual Possession of Dream Houses

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had invited applications for the economically-weaker sections (EWS) housing scheme in February 2008.It had extended the deadline for submission of documents four times. A total 17,044 people had applied for the scheme and 13,775 were found to be eligible.

The housing project for the EWS is being completed jointly by the PCMC, and the state and central governments. Each beneficiary will get a tenement admeasuring 498 sq ft. The beneficiary will have to pay Rs 3.76 lakh as his contribution for the tenement.

While 6,720 beneficiaries were selected by a draw of lots on Tuesday, the names of another 6,530 people, who are eligible, have been put on a waiting list. The PCMC is yet to decide the location for starting construction of houses for the people in the waiting list. Civic officials on Tuesday said the 6,720 people, who were selected on Tuesday, will need to pay Rs 50,000 and book their tenements. The list of selected beneficiaries has been posted on the official website of the PCMC.

The 6,720 beneficiaries from the EWS in Pimpri-Chinchwad, who were selected for allotment of houses in a project under the JNNURM on Tuesday, will have to wait till December next year for the actual possession of their dream houses.

Initially, only 2,000 beneficiaries will get possessions by December 2012, while the remaining will have to wait further for few more months till the construction is completed. Meanwhile, several organisations, which were opposed to the decision to hold draw of lots, withdrew their agitation on Tuesday. The organisations had been demanding that the PCMC should first construct all the 13,250 tenements in the housing scheme and then hold the draw of lots. The organisations withdrew their agitation after they got an assurance from mayor Yogesh Behl that all the remaining tenements will be built for the eligible beneficiaries.
