Garbage lessons by students to civic body

No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Cities,Civic Issues,Maintenance Posted On: Jan 28, 2013

Students collecting garbageStudents of Vasavi Vidya Niketan (VVN) College, VV Puram are knocking each and every doors of the residents of Basavanagudi asking them to donate dry waste.

The students are collecting a minimum of one tonne of dry waste every fortnight, recycling it and contributing immensely to reducing the load that goes to the landfills.

Some lecturers of Vasavi Vidya Niketan (VVN) College thought that the BBMP’s waste segregation was not successful so they thought that VVN students could use their energy and they started collecting plastic and paper waste from houses six months ago and give it to the college for recycling. Then the dry waste collected by students is sent to Hasiru Dala, an NGO, for further recycling.

To launch the campaign, the students of the college started collecting dry waste from residential localities near the college. Every Thursday, after college hours the students are spending over two hours in collecting dry waste from the residential units near our college.

The college students first convinced the public about the initiative. Now the residents are handling over their dry waste including tetra packs, glass, neatly washed plastic covers and plastic waste materials to us. A resident said that BBMP should do the same thing what these students are doing.
