The Karnataka Information Commission (KIC) is introducing an integrated short message service (SMS) to help petitioners track their cases. Currently, the commission sends notices to applicants by post.Next time, you file a complaint or a petition along with your cell number before the KIC, you will receive an SMS allotting your case number. Subsequently, every time you quote this case number, you will be told the case status — until the verdict is announced.

The KIC is tying up with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and National Informatics Centre (NIC) to develop a software and integrate the messaging service. The KIC is planning to integrate all petitions with a special software whereby applicants will get to track the case via cellphones. The facility, however, will not be mandatory. It will be made available to only those who make a mention of their cellphone numbers and make a specific request to avail of the facility.

KIC is also planning to start hearing of RTI cases via video-conferencing. The e-governance department is setting up a video-conferencing facility at the KIC office situated in the city. Currently, all petitioners and information officers have to physically appear before the commission in Bangalore during hearings. Making use of the conferencing facility available at the deputy commissioners’ offices at the district level, the commission will now connect with the RTI petitioners and respondents from their studios located in Bangalore.
