GHMC Hyderabad in Dilemma over Development of Commercial Complex
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has recently served notices on about 375 traders of Monda Market and 80 traders of the Chilkalguda municipal complex in Secunderabad and asked them to vacate. The civic body has proposed to demolish the existing two-floor structure and construct a new complex in about four acres land.
The traders have been paying meagre rent between Rs 300 and Rs 700 per month to the municipal authorities, while rents were about Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per month in the same area. The traders fear that construction might take several years and they have to pay more rent during the construction period.
“There are two-three options, whether to construct a market complex or a commercial complex or a tower in Chilkalguda. It has not yet been finalised. We will take a decision once negotiations with traders are completed,” GHMC estate officer Chandrasekhara Reddy told TOI.
Similarly, the GHMC has proposed to develop the existing Monda Market as a model market by constructing a multi-storied complex a couple of years ago. In the seven-acre market, about 375 traders have shops (mulgis) and have been paying Rs 10 to Rs 100 rent per month to the corporation for the past few decades. About 500 traders sell vegetables and fruits, while another 10,000 visit the market daily.
The shopkeepers want alternate accommodation till the new complex is ready apart from an assurance to accommodate them in the new complex. The authorities are willing to provide them space in the proposed complexes but have reportedly told them to make their own arrangements till the completion of new buildings.
In Monda Market, wholesale business was shifted to Bowenpally in 1997-98. There was a proposal to shift the retail market too, but the idea was dropped due to resentment from the traders and locals.
“The blue print for the proposed ‘model market‘ was prepared a year ago and was kept in abeyance due to resentment from traders,” a senior GHMC official said.
