No Comments Sub Category:Cities,Civic Issues,Hyderabad Posted On: Jan 21, 2013

GHMCHyderabad- The High court banned the Andhra Pradesh government in permitting construction work in public places and main roads or erect any statue. This came in as a big relief for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other urban local bodies.

Such structures often cause obstruction to traffic during infrastructure works like junction improvement, construction of new flyovers, road widening etc. A big amount is spent by authorities for the maintenance of these statutes of politicians for example painting, repairs etc.

According to the orders of government, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) looks after four statues on NTR Marg Road while GHMC takes care of 70 to 75 statues in Greater Hyderabad for which Rs 50 lakh are spent annually for maintenance. Almost 1,500 to 2,000 statues were erected in and by-lanes of the Hyderabad city illegally.

In fact, GHMC had received around 20 applications in past few years to unveil many statues of many leaders. But no permission was granted because of traffic issues.

Now after the Supreme Court orders, applications will be rejected instantly by GHMC. The construction work of PV Narasimha Rao Expressway from Mehdipatnam to Gachibowli faced many problems due to many statues erected on the main road. Officials convinced the people to shift the statues to nearby places.

President of Forum for Better Hyderabad is happy with the court orders and feels that the religious structures which are obstructing traffic must be relocated to nearby places. Residents of areas like Bagh Linampally, Ameerpet also supported the court orders and suggested state government and implementing agencies to strictly adhere to the court orders.
