Godavari project faces land acquisition problem
Hyderabad – The Godavari drinking water project is facing difficulties in acquisition of 50 acre forest land spread across Karimnagar, Medak and Rangareddy districts. This patch of forest land is creating hurdles for the early completion of the project.
Additionally, a suitable land for construction of Master Balancing Reservoir at Ghanpur is yet to be acquired.
The completion of this Rs 3,375 crore project can bring relief to many parched throats. This is a 150 ml capacity reservoir which requires 25 acres of land.
These two components are essentially required to complete and commission the project before December 31, 2013 which will provide additional 735 million litres per day (mld ) water to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area. Besides these two trouble shots, entire project is making brisk progress.
Though the forest land matter has not got green signal from the Union Cabinet, the Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangalore has promised to clear this matter at the earliest. The process of approval will take not less than two to three months.
According to the officials of Water Board, special attention of chief minister can make things move on. If the board could not acquire the land from Forest Department, then they would opt its own identified land at Murmur in Karimnagar district.
The Godavari drinking water project will draw 172 mgd (10 tmc) of water from the Yellampally barrage covering a distance of 186 km. This barrage is located in Karimnagar to Ghanpur near Shamirpet.
As per the Chief General Manager of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), around 117.77 km of pipeline has been covered in three packages. The total expenditure done so far is around Rs 1,949.53 crore.
Water Board engineers recently tested the pumps at Kirloskarwadi factory in Maharashtra. Each pump will discharge 735 mld water per day. Now the pumps along with motors are ready to be installed at Kondapaka pump station. Such pumps would also be required at Murmur, Mallaram and Bommakal pump stations.
