No plans prepared to overcome water crisis in Hyderabad
Hyderabad – The city will suffer water crisis this summer and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has still not prepared any plans to overcome it.
Himayatsagar and Osmansagar are about to hit dead storage levels. The concerned authorities are very much aware of the forthcoming water crisis after the shortage of rainfall in monsoon but no actions are taken. Officials doubt that this summer would witness a heavy water crisis in Hyderabad as it was in the year 2003.
According to the director of HMWS&SB, the water board has initiated to prepare plans in this regard. These plans will alleviate water problems in the Hyderabad city. He added that all the operation and maintenance managers are directed to submit contingency plans.
As per an official, till first week of February 2013, water will be supplied via gravity. It will be supplied till the water level hits 1,764 feet at Osmansagar. Then pumps will be used to take water from the reservoirs. Thus from next ,water board would supply 10 to 12 million gallons per day (MGD) less from the normal supply to customers. The water board normally supplies 340 MGD to its customers.
The water level recorded at Singur is 517 metres. The officials will continue the supply till water level dips to 515 meters. The Board will take care of the stored water till end of March 2013. The tentative plan says that around 2.5 MGD of Krishna water would be diverted to Narayanguda line for supplies to the Secretariat and MLA Quarters at Hyderguda and Adarshnagar. Another 12 MGD to Mir Alam filter bed and 17.5 MGD to Asifnagar filter bed.
The Board will soon declare the contingency plan to customers in next seven days.
