Guidelines launched for large green building complexes
New Delhi- ‘GRIHA LD’, a new rating system for green large building complexes, has been launched by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with Association for Development and Research of Sustainable Habitats (ADARSH).
GRIHA LD would provide planning practices and guidelines that can be followed to reduce the negative environmental impact of large-scale developments. By following these guidelines, large building complexes can also get the Indian green architecture certification-GRIHA for being environment friendly. Till now, Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) was only meant for smaller buildings.
GRIHA Large Developments (LD) guidelines for the establishments of very large structures (greater than or equal to 50 hectares of area) will cover larger townships. It includes housing complexes by builders, housing complexes by urban development organizations and township projects undertaken by housing board and public sector. The new system is also applicable to educational and institutional campuses, medical colleges and hospital complexes, Special economic zones (SEZ) and hotels or resorts.
The projects which are designed in a way by which they can bring down the negative impact on its surroundings to the minimum and will attempt to be self-sufficient in aspects in energy and water will be considered for the GRIHA rating of green buildings. The assessment will be done based on safe and walkable neighborhoods, use of eco-friendly construction materials, waste water and solid waste management and site selection and planning and many more.
The new system has also got the support and endorsement from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2007 and Simple Versatile Affordable GRIHA (SVAGRIHA).
The Director of Sustainable Habitat, TERI said that GRIHA LD will go beyond buildings and focus on urbanscape and habitats. It will be useful to allow urban growth with the available resources in a sustainable manner.
The system will address issues pertaining to site, water waste and energy management in large area structures. It goes beyond buildings following a consolidated framework for assessment of environmental impacts of the habitat in a holistic manner.
In precise the green rating to the project will be provided based on the total negative impact of the development. Thus, the lower the negative impact of any large structure, the higher the star rating of the proposed development.
