Gurgaon to get a Development Authority Soon
The need to establish a development authority and Gurgaon getting a peanut of the revenue it generates are the two issues which MP Rao Inderjit Singh has been raising for the past few years. The mayor and his team’s decision to pass resolutions on the issues show how the “team” picked up by Singh has been literally working to fulfill his wish. The team had highlighted how the city is literally run from Chandigarh, though creation of the erstwhile municipal council and the present corporation aimed to decentralize its governance.
They had also pointed out how at least 50% of the state’s revenue is being generated from Gurgaon and despite this the city is in a bad shape. TOI in the past has also highlighted how the interests of Gurgaon is ignored even as the city remains the face of “Shining Haryana”, including the flow of foreign direct investment in the state.
It’s not just Anna Hazare who has gone with the people’s mood, even Gurgaon mayor and his deputies seem to be following what people want in the city. On Saturday, mayor Vimal Yadav said he strongly favours Gurgaon’s revenue expenditure on development of the city and its surrounding areas. Yadav said a resolution will be passed during the House meeting on August 26 to establish the Gurgaon Development Authority (GDA).
On whether the creation of a development authority would mean that the municipal body will be left with little work, Yadav said, “It’s not a question of our identity or existence. We need to develop Gurgaon as one of the most efficient cities and that can happen when we have an authority. The municipal corporation can manage its financial needs by generating property tax. Areas falling outside the municipal limit can be developed by the GDA.”
Earlier in the day, Yadav, senior deputy mayor Yashpal Batra and deputy mayor Parminder Kataria announced that they are in favour of construction of flyovers to solve traffic jams in the city. “We will hire an expert agency to assess the need of such elevated road at different points. Based on the report, we will push those projects. We need to find way out to meet the growing traffic demand,” Batra said.
The corporation also plans to establish a full fledged office to meet the future requirements. The leaders said they would seek a 2-acre land near Silokhra village for constructing the MCG office. “The chief engineer will be given the task to follow this. We are hopeful of getting a full-fledged office soon,” Yadav said. The leaders also announced that all efforts would be made to remove encroachments from the city.
