HC seeks govt views on cell phone towers
The Delhi High Court has issued notice to the central and Delhi governments on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on the installation of cell phone towers on residential buildings.
The PIL, reports that these towers can pose health hazards to residents living within 50-metre radius and also sought urgent steps to reduce the radiation emitted by the towers.
The Union health ministry and the department of telecommunication have been asked to file their responses by August 9.
The court has ordered the central government to file the panel’s reports and its suggestions on the issue.
Radiation from mobile phone towers causes brain cancer, as reported by the committee before the World Health Organization, said Sugriv Dubey , petitioner A S Jain’s advocate.
According to the petition, the radiation values and norms in other countries are more stringent and the radiation levels allowed through such towers is much lower but in our country there are no separate rules or norms for residential areas, schools, offices, hospitals and play grounds to prevent exposure to radiation.
