Heavy Downpour flooded the Residential Areas in Gurgaon

Areas around DLF-II, Bristol Chowk, Sikanderpur, Sector 15, Sector 17, Golf Course Road, Old and New Railway Road, Mahavir Chowk, a few colonies of old Gurgaon and the service lanes on the expressway also witnessed heavy waterlogging along with most of the condominiums in Sushant Lok I Block A, DLF – II and Jacaranda Marg.

Over four hours of heavy downpour on Tuesday morning flooded the privately developed colonies as well as the condominiums in the city. With that, issues like flooded streets, clogged drains and long traffic snarls, which plague the city almost every time it rains, also resurfaced.

Although the highrises in new Gurgaon were geared to face the consequences of a heavy downpour, their arrangement seemed to be washed away, as most of the condominiums in Sushant Lok I Block A, DLF – II and Jacaranda Marg reported waterlogging within the premises. Even Belvedere Tower in DLF Cyber City and Essel Tower on M G Road were not spared by the deluge.

“Thankfully, the schools were closed due to rain today and I did not have to drop my kids in such a messy traffic. After witnessing the condition of the roads and the traffic jams, even I preferred to stay at home today as commuting on the rain-wrecked roads would have been a nightmare,” said Nitika Sharma, a software engineer working in Gurgaon.

Belvedere Tower started flooding as soon as the rain started around 8am on Tuesday. Power supply to the lifts had to be disconnected after the rainwater started accumulating in the basements. Rajiv Jaggi, president of Belvedere Tower RWA, said, “The apartments are a tad low-lying as compared to the road level and this often results in water seeping into the parking lots. We had to install three portable pumps to flush out the water. Other than that, we had already placed sand bags to check the inflow of water.”

Similarly, the basements of Essel Tower were flooded after the downpour. Even the entry gate of the condominium was submerged under water after the rain. Rajesh Malhotra, a resident, said, “This has been a persistent problem for several years now. The level of the road has gone up due to carpeting, which results in water inundation at the entry gate of the apartment and then in the basements. The basement is the foundation of the building and due to water seepage, the foundation of the building is rotting.”
