High water bills agitate Delhi residents

No Comments Sub Category:Cities,Community,Delhi-NCR Posted On: Feb 13, 2013

Residents of Delhi are shocked to see their water bills. A resident has received bill amounting to Rs. Rs 14,340 whereas, the bill till last January was Rs  6,151.

This is not the only case, there are more similar cases like this, where amount in the bill is just unimaginable.

A Vasant Kunj resident’s bill shot up from Rs  1,113 for four months in the last billing cycle to Rs 4,984. A Hauz Khas resident’s bill took a leap from Rs 670 to Rs 1,700.

The reason cited was that the installation of new water meters at their residents, however, many residents are still using old meters.

In another the case, the water bill of a resident of Trilokpuri was Rs 9,647 from February 2009 till February 2012 . From February 2012-13, his bill went up to Rs 10,876. He lives with a family of five and no new member has been added in the past four years. The residents are asking Delhi Jal Board to give explanation for this particular case.

After receiving several complaints, some DJB officials have acknowledged that the water utility was losing huge amounts of money due to average consumption billing done wherever meters didn’t exist or had not been functioning properly. On the basis of average consumption, each household was being billed for the usage of 22 kl/month. However, after installing the new meter, it is showing the actual readings which is higher than 22. Hence, the water bills will be high naturally.

At Preet Vihar zonal office, violence took place as the agitated residents roughed up officials at the counter asking for their money back saying that the officials are cheating them.
