Water Woes Continue to Haunt Hyderabad Outskirts
Hyderabad Chief Minister directed HMWSSB Hyderabad to supply drinking water on a daily basis but about 60K households are getting water only once in three to five days. Even after three years the chief minister directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to supply drinking water on a daily basis to all municipal circles, nearly 60,000 households are still getting water once in three to five days.
Of 340 million gallons per day (MGD) allocated by the HMWS&SB to the city, the surrounding municipal areas get only 93.80 MGD. For instance, the Water Board has allocated 26 MGD water for nearly 50,000 connections in the Old City (O&M division 1) and for an equal number of connections in Qutubullapur division; the share is much lower at 12 MGD.
While 48,717 households get water once every three days, 10,760 connections get water once in five days in peripheral areas like Alwal, Malkajgiri, Qutubullapur and Kapra. Apart from this, over a lakh households get water supply on alternate days in the peripheral areas and officials fear the situation might get worse if there is deficit rainfall this season.
