House Allotments begin for EWS in Sabarmati Riverfront Ahmedabad
3,800 houses were being allotted under economically weaker sections (EWS) housing scheme at the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. After the allotments touts made their rounds at the centre specifically among those who had been allotted houses in Odhav area. They claimed to buy these houses for anything between Rs 3 and 5 lakh. The touts targeted those beneficiaries who were included in the final list of project affected families (PAF). Most touts asked the beneficiaries if they had received the token and if their signatures or thumb impressions had been taken.
Deputy municipal commissioner, Dilip Mahajan, said, “To curb any foul play, we have instituted a society for each dwelling that will undertake responsibility of maintaining common amenities. This society will also have a municipal officer as one of its members. We have had experience of such touts in the past and this time we have ensured that the houses are allotted to those who deserve them.”
Over 40 counters were set for the allotment of EWS housing at the Sabarmati riverfront. The procedure for allotment on the basis of a ‘computer lottery system’ was undertaken at the counters. The procedure was carried out after a brief interruption due to a short circuit fire in the main hall where revenue minister Anandi Patel was delivering a speech.
A senior official of the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) told, “Apart from photographs, we are taking biometric identities for each allotee. We have also appointed NGOs to go to individual houses and collect their monthly installments after loans worth Rs 60,000 are disbursed. Besides this, a quarterly inspection of all occupants will be undertaken by zonal municipal officers.”
