house taxChandigarh- The upcoming proposal for the imposition of house tax is expected to create an up stir in the General House on February 28. The already mooted agenda by the nominated Councillors has been opposed by the elected representatives in the past.

This proposal was mooted by the nominated councillors after a meeting by the UT Administrator. The meeting was however adjourned due to the ruckus created over the issues which was tabled last year. The proposal will be scheduled in the meeting which is to be held in the end of the month.

The proposal stated that a house tax of Rs 1 per sq yard will be imposed followed by a house tax being not more than Rs. 1,000 per month. Houses which are lesser than 10 marals in areas, villages and colonies will be exempted from the tax payment.

The imposition of tax was directed by the Mayor during the meeting. He further assured the administrator that the issue will be taken in the House and the Councillors will be apprised. The MC House will take up the decision followed by repeated reminders from the administrator to the MC for imposing the tax.

The imposition of tax is likely to be opposed by the BJP as the BJP councillor stated that the administration was designated to fulfill certain conditions and cater some facilities based on the agreement of JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) which have also been not provided. He further added that the property tax on commercial properties has already been collected and that the demand for imposing property tax on residential properties is not justified.

The property tax on commercial property was imposed stating that the MC will get a grant via the administration based on the tax collected which was also not been given. Meanwhile, the administration has been contending that if there is no imposition of the house tax, the JNNURM grants to the city will be stopped.
