House taxChandigarh- The monthly housing meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation held on January 31, 2013 resulted in elaborated calculation to levy house tax in the city.
It proposed imposition of tax as follows-

a) For owners having house more 125 sq yd or five marlas or 1360 sq ft area are suppose to pay house tax at the rated of Rupees one per sq yd.( 1 marla is equal to 25 sq yd or 272.25  sq ft). This amount paid will be restricted to Rs 1000 in a year.

b) Low Income Group (LIG) and Economically Weaker Section (EWS), it will be exempted from this.

c) If house tax is calculated for apartments or flats in Chandigarh, then a lump sum amount will be charged accordingly.

One Kanal is equal to 500 sq yds or 20 marlas. Thus as per proposal an owner living in one kanal house will have to pay Rs 500 per annum. It comes out to be Rs 1000 for owner living in two, three, four, five , six or more kanal house. It is because the maximum amount to be paid on house tax is Rs 1000 per annum irrespective of space occupied by house.

This agenda was proposed by nine nominated councillors who demanded discussion and action of this proposal strongly. As this proposal comes into action then there will be many houses (20,655) which will come under five marla to six kanal or more. Thus owners of these houses will fall under this proposed tax system.

The decision of amount was taken after viewing and studying records of houses. This will help the city to increase its revenue by at least  Rupees one crore and thus grants will be received on a continuous basis by the government. They also proposed that people can pay tax amount along with their water bills which in turn will save individual’s time and energy too while going to office and enquire about.
