1 Comment Sub Category:Awareness,Community Posted On: Dec 27, 2010

Earlier, people used to prefer apartments over individual houses because they considered the former to be safer. But after a few murders in apartments recently, apartment dwellers are taking steps to ensure more security. Though luxury apartments follow strict norms in giving entry to visitors, apartments for upper middle-class group have also started restricting entry to the visitors. Some Apartment owners association and RWA’s had planned to set up self-protection groups, comprising the residents of the area.

However,Bangalore City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari noted that most of the murders in apartments were committed by an acquaintance of the victim. He said the police or vigil cannot prevent murders that take place due to personal reasons. He said it was up to the apartment authorities to look after its security. Meanwhile, the police say they have held many meeting with apartment dwellers to create awareness about safety precautions to be followed in apartments.

As part of crime prevention month, recently the police have also distributed pamphlets and hand bills to residents of various apartments. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), T Sunil Kumar, said even after repeated meetings with apartment associations, they are neglecting the suggested norms. He added that the police would shortly convene a meeting to discuss the security steps to be followed in apartments.

Kindly clarify whether Fire Escape/service stair cases, provided in 7-storied Buildings in Delhi, can be blocked for prevention of thefts/burglaries? Will it not be violation of Fire Safety norms/requirements?
